Supermarket giant Tesco has today launched Britain‘s first automatic price comparison coupon comparing own label as well as branded products.

Comparing the total cost of a basket of branded, own label and fresh food groceries, Tesco‘s Price Promise matches the price of goods against the same or equivalent products from rivals Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury‘s, offering a coupon of up to £10 if the basket would be cheaper elsewhere.

Issued automatically to the customer at the till upon receiving their receipt, the coupon is also available to online shoppers via email.

The roll-out follows a successful trial of the scheme in Northern Ireland and hopes to build on the grocer‘s Clubcard offering in providing value for money.

In order to ensure a comprehensive comparison, Price Promise will also cover promotions such as half price and buy one, get one free offers available at Tesco and other leading grocers and includes the Tesco Everyday Value range.

In order to qualify for the coupon service, shoppers must purchase a basket with a minimum of 10 different products inside, of which at least one must be comparable.

“We‘re the first major retailer in the UK to compare our prices against the branded and own label prices of our competitors and give customers an automatic coupon for the difference,” said Tesco‘s UK Managing Director Chris Bush.

“We‘re working hard to build a better Tesco for our customers in the UK, and Price Promise is an important part of that.

“It gives our customers complete confidence that they won‘t lose out by shopping at Tesco.

“We know that most of our customers already save money by shopping at Tesco. On those few occasions where they could have got a better deal elsewhere, we‘ll make sure we give them back the difference.”
