Discount grocer Lidl is to extend its store at the Edmonton Green Shopping Centre in North London having leased two of its adjoining units, it was confirmed today.

The units, owned by regeneration specialist St. Modwen, will increase the store size by approximately 50 per cent to 13,000 sq ft, and have been let on a 20-year lease at a rate of £140,000 pa.

Lidl is currently undertaking a nationwide expansion plan in the UK, buoyed by recent growth in grocery market share.

Gary Morris, Senior Development Manager at St. Modwen, commented: “Edmonton Green is thriving in what is still a period of market recovery. It is particularly positive that, as well as letting stores to new retailers, existing tenants such as Lidl are expanding in the centre.

“This is good news for Edmonton Green which continues to attract household names as footfall and demand increases.”

Once the extension and refit is complete Lidl will become one of the biggest stores at the centre which also houses Boots, Argos Extra, Asda, Tesco and Superdrug amongst others.

Edmonton Green is also poised to undertake a £1.3 million mall refurbishment and a new Travelodge hotel is shortly set to open on the site.

A Lidl spokesperson commented: “Lidl has occupied the current unit since May 2008. We now look forward to opening a larger store shortly with an increased product offering and enhanced customer experience as well as offering new jobs for local people.”
