Global technology provider Oracle has been recruited by online and home shopping retailer Shop Direct Group to help expand its e-commerce operation.

The Liverpool-based company will use Oracle Retail’s various merchandising and planning applications, which the business hopes will promote greater return on inventory investment, streamline pricing decisions and improve planning and forecasting capabilities.

Shop Direct, which owns a number of companies such as Littlewoods, and new mature women’s brand Isme, recently reported that Christmas 2010 sales increased by five per cent year-on-year.

Its e-commerce operation accounted for around 70 per cent of revenues during the period, with the first week of December representing a record online sales week for the group.

A statement published by Oracle this week suggested that, although Shop Direct’s online arm is performing well, there are still a number of other business and IT efficiencies that can be achieved through its new partnership with the firm.

Technology and consulting company IBM has been picked by Shop Direct as the implementation partner, and the first phase of the deployment has already begun.

Carl Dawson, Chief Information Officer at Shop Direct Group, commented: “Shop Direct Group required a world-class core retail platform to achieve our business requirements for strategic growth.

“We identified Oracle’s solutions as key to helping us create a more efficient and standard retail operating platform of business processes and systems to strengthen the company’s foundation for future growth.”
