The third-generation Kindle has become Amazon.com’s bestselling product of all time, knocking the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows book into second place.

It is just five months since the product was launched by the online shopping giant, but it has already ended up in the company’s history books as millions of people around the world have opted to buy the portable e-book reader.

A statement released by Amazon this week said that Christmas Day saw a record number of people turning on new Kindles for the first time, downloading Kindle Buy Once, Read Everywhere apps, and purchasing Kindle books.

Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com founder and CEO, said: “We’re grateful to the millions of customers who have made the all-new Kindle the bestselling product in the history of Amazon, surpassing Harry Potter 7.”

This year also brought another record for Amazon, with customers ordering more than 13.7 million items worldwide across all product categories on November 29th.

Such purchasing activity represented a record-breaking 158 items selling per second.

Last week’s Christmas Customer Satisfaction Index from market research group Foresee Results suggested that Amazon.com is the number one e-tailer in terms of consumer satisfaction.

UK-based sister company Amazon.co.uk was ranked second, while fellow pure-play internet retailer Play.com completed the top three.
