Failed department store group TJ Hughes will close 22 stores by the end of next week resulting in the loss of 1,061 jobs, administrators announced this afternoon.
Professional services firm Ernst & Young (E&Y) said that it will continue to seek a buyer for the remainder of the retailer’s business, while trading stock through the group’s whole portfolio.
Store closures will begin on August 10th 2011 when TJ Hughes in Shrewsbury trades for the last time, while 21 further outlets will cease to operate over the course of the following four days.
Other stores set to close include those based in Bolton, Birkenhead and Widnes in the north-west, and Crawley, Watford and Weston-super-Mare in the south.
Tom Jack, Joint Administrator at E&Y, said: “It is regrettable that we have had to schedule these store closures and we are extremely grateful to the employees and management at all the group’s stores, at the head office and at warehouses for their loyalty and support during what has been a very difficult and uncertain time.”
Today’s statement comes after the administrator revealed earlier this week that non-food specialist Lewis’s Home Retail had reached a deal to acquire TJ Hughes’ flagship store in Liverpool as well as outlets in Eastbourne, Glasgow and Sheffield.
All current employees are expected to retain their positions, meaning around 450 jobs were saved as a result of the takeover.
“We continue in negotiations with a number of interested parties for a large number of the remaining stores in the group’s portfolio,” Jack added.
“We are keen to stress that those stores unaffected by these closures will continue to trade for the time being, with new stock lines being added.”
