Discount retailer Poundland has today revealed that it is hoping to recruit up to 2,000 temporary staff for the busy Christmas period.

With 400 stores across the UK, Poundland is Europe‘s biggest single price discount retailer and is looking for staff across a vast majority of its portfolio.

Additional vacancies will also be available at any of the 10 temporary Christmas stores which are set to open over the next two months.

From October 1st 2012, most stores will start taking applications and forms are available to collect from local stores while Job Centre Plus sites will also advertise the roles.

Earlier this year, a court judge rejected claims from an ex-Poundland employee that her non-paid position at the retailer was tantamount to slave labour, deeming work schemes that aim to get young people back into work lawful.

Jim McCarthy, Poundland CEO, said of the latest festive scheme: “Christmas is a really busy time for Poundland and we‘re thrilled, especially when employment figures are so low, that we can offer even more people a job over the festive period.

“We‘re looking for enthusiastic, hard-working people, who enjoy interacting with customers to give the best service possible.

“Last year approximately 30 per cent of our temporary colleagues secured permanent roles in the business following the Christmas period.”
