HMV has reported a surge in demand for Olympic merchandise following Sunday‘s Sports Personality of the Year programme.

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year attracted an audience of 14.5 million people, and since Sunday sales of London 2012 Olympic Games DVD have increased by 269 per cent.

Sales of the London 2012 Paralympic Games DVD have also been boosted by the programme, with HMV reporting a 144 per cent increase.

Due to Emeli Sandé‘s performance on the show, sales of her album “Our Version of Events” have nearly doubled since Sunday night.

This album was already the biggest-selling of 2012, and it is thought that this boost may push it into the Christmas No. 1 position.

The Olympics and Paralympics DVDs were also already among HMV‘s strongest-selling products.

HMV‘s Gennaro Castaldo commented: “The BBc‘s Sports Personality of the Year was a wonderful celebration of an amazing year of sport that allowed us all to relive and savour our glorious Olympic summer one more time.

“It‘s no surprise that we should see such a strong pick up in demand for both DVDs given they feature the supreme achievements of Team GB and Paralympics GB, as well as another boost for Emeli Sandé, whose music has become part of the soundtrack to the games.

“Had there been a Bradley Wiggins DVD I‘m sure we‘d be seeing a surge in demand for that too.”

HMV has been struggling to compete with online retailers such as Amazon in recent years and announced last Thursday that it is likely to breach its banking covenants in the new year.
