UK cashback & voucher site Quidco has announced today that online supermarket sales went up by 69 per cent on a like-for-like basis in the week to May 29th 2012.

Following last month‘s record deluges, shoppers raced to buy hot weather essentials such as sun cream, barbeque food and summer beverages to quench their thirst, spending an approximate average of £63.52 on each basket of groceries over the period.

Founded in 2005, the now two million members of the discount site are entitled access to offers from over 3,300 retailers; for all purchases made, they receive the company‘s commission in the form of cashback. Discount vouchers are another option available to the customer who can use them to get an instant discount or print them off to use in its stores.

Jo Roberts, Head of PR at Quidco said: “Having endured weeks of wet weather, recent temperatures have provided a boost for many, including the supermarkets.”

Upmarket supermarket chain Waitrose revealed a 6.6 per cent year-on-year rise in sales last week as the warm weather boosted the trade of wines and ciders, and the sunshine is expected to have helped the grocery industry more generally thanks to an increase in barbeques over the weekend.

Roberts added that many Brits are opting to make the most of the public holidays and pleasant weather at home rather than holidaying abroad this summer:

“With many unable to head abroad this year, as household budgets remain under pressure, it is clear that many took advantage of the sunshine and made sure their holiday was at home this weekend.”
