mySupermarket‘s Groceries Tracker has revealed that the average weekly shop of 35 grocery products has increased by 0.55% in the last month to £88.59. Analysis by the independent shopping and comparison website has identified the staple items that increased the most as carrots by 4.55%, fresh peppers by 4.57% and broccoli by a massive 16.53% from the month before.

It‘s not all bad news, as other products have decreased in price such as grapes (-3.61%), crisps (-2.71%), potatoes (-2.62%) and squash drinks (-2.3%). In fact, the average grocery basket in February 2015 is still a massive £6.05, or 6.4% less than in February 2014.

Each month the mySupermarket Groceries Tracker includes an Own Brand Watch revealing the cheapest supermarket for specific categories of own brand groceries out of Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury‘s, Morrisons, Aldi, Ocado and Waitrose.

February‘s Own Brand Watch shows that those looking to purchase baby products should browse Ocado and Waitrose‘s ranges, who were joint cheapest (and also best for packets and cereals). For those with a sweet tooth, Asda is favourable, offering the best prices across snacks and sweets. Drinks, frozen and pet products are best bought from Morrisons, which is also cheapest for meat, fish and poultry along with Aldi. The German discounter is also best priced for dairy and egg products, bakery items, fruits and vegetables, ready meals, tins and also jars.

Gilad Simhony, CEO of mySupermarket, commented on the findings: ‘‘Although we have seen a rise in the cost of the weekly shop in the last month, shoppers are still seeing a saving of over £6 compared to 12 months ago. Even with the increase in certain products over the last month, longer term, we see a welcome trend of lower food prices due to the continued supermarket price war.”

As no one supermarket can claim to be the cheapest overall, Simhony insists on the nation‘s need to compare prices before buying.
