Department store House of Fraser is to host this year‘s turning on of the Christmas lights on London‘s Oxford Street with pop singer Robbie Williams switching them on, it has been announced.
On Monday 5th November, Williams will be joined by fellow stars Leona Lewis and boy-band Lawson as well as Heart 106.2 radio presenters Jamie Theakston and Emma Bunton.
For the first time, London-based group The New West End Company, which has organised the event, announced that this will be a ticketed event with free tickets available from today via Heart‘s website.
Nigel Oddy, Executive Director of Group Merchandising & Planning at House of Fraser said: “House of Fraser is thrilled to be hosting the switch on of the Marmite Oxford Street Lights.
“As one of London‘s most popular events in the run-up to Christmas, this is guaranteed to be a fantastic occasion and we are extremely proud to have it taking place outside our store this November.”
Last month, the New West End Company called for congestion improvements in the capital in the hopes of enticing more shoppers to the exclusive West End and boosting the capital‘s economy.
Commenting at the time, London Mayor Boris Johnson said: “London‘s West End is a shopping magnet, attracting visitors from all over the world, driving jobs and growth and boosting London‘s economy.
“Bringing together the energy and experience of businesses in this flagship retail hub, and drawing up a clear vision for the future through the New West End Company, is essential to its continued success.”
It is hoped that the paid-for event will generate a buzz around the iconic switch-on and entice shoppers into surrounding stores.
Williams expressed excitement about the upcoming event, which will see him perform some of his hit singles.
He said: “Oxford Street is a fantastic place to do your Christmas shopping and it‘s great to be part of the celebrations.
“I can‘t believe I am turning on the lights! ‘Take the Crown‘ is released on the same day – 5th November – and I‘m looking forward to performing for the amazing crowds on London‘s Oxford Street.”
