Grocery giant Tesco is set to launch a new online food delivery service in London offering party food, Retail Gazette understands.

Offering pre-prepared food, the service will initially launch solely in the London area though this is likely to be rolled out on a broader scale at a later date.

Currently weathering an unsettled period, Tesco‘s latest move seeks to build on its existing multichannel offer, following news earlier this week of its acquisition of e-book provider Mobcast.

Launching ahead of the busy Christmas period, the service may bring competition from rivals as UK supermarkets maintain their focus on beating rivals‘ prices and deals, while high street retailer Marks and Spencer already has its ‘Food to Order‘ scheme in place, a click & collect offer for its foodhall goods launched last October.

Andrew Yaxley, Commercial Director at Tesco said: “We are always looking for new ways to meet the needs of our customers. We‘ll be launching a trial of a new food delivery service in the London area later this year.

“The service will give customers the opportunity to buy a wide range of ready-for-the-table foods and will offer the quality and affordability customers expect from Tesco.”
