Gadget Shop brand bought by WHSmith

WHSmith last week bought the gadget and toy brand the Gadget Shop from toy retailer The Entertainer.

No official announcement has been made regarding the acquisition but the retailer did confirm the purchase today.

The Gadget Shop fell into administration in 2005 after a number of board members pushed for a sale. The retailer had debts of a few million pounds and was purchased by The Entertainer.

A WHSmith spokesman told Retail Gazette: “We already have a number of Gadget Shop branded products that we stock and this acquisition enables us to push this partnership further.”

Founded in 1991 by Jonathan Elvidge, the Gadget Shop sells everything from computer games to videophones and other electronic gadgetry and gifts.
