New retailers, a better shopping experience and a plethora of jobs are being promised as part of a new £1 billion redevelopment project in Basildon.
Leader of Basildon Council Tony Ball said that the plans, which were approved today, would move the location back into the top 50 town centres in the UK.
Basildon Regeneration (BWB), which is a joint venture between Barratt Homes and Wilson Bowden Developments, will be the local authority’s development partner for the project over the next 20 years.
A master plan outlining timings and details of the redevelopment must now be prepared over the next 12 months.
Early indications are that there will be 52,000 sq m of new retail and leisure space constructed, as well as 54,000 sq m of new offices and 1,900 additional homes.
Other improvements include the construction of a new hotel and regeneration of public spaces.
Councillor Ball said: “With a new and improved shopping and leisure experience, more jobs and homes this will in turn help to create a new economic vibrancy to the town centre.
“The regeneration is about the whole town centre, not just the shopping streets.
“The plans extend beyond the shopping core, providing opportunities to maximise the range of facilities and job creation.”
