Asda, the UK’s second largest retailer, has today announced the appointment of former Tesco executive Simon King as its new Chief Operating Officer (COO).
King takes over the position formerly held by Asda’s current CEO Andy Clarke and will be in charge of all retail and supply chain operations including distribution, customer service and internal communications.
After working for Safeway, the new boss ran international operations for Tesco across a number of Asian and eastern European countries.
Clarke commented: “I’m thrilled to welcome Simon to Asda. In his career, he’s demonstrated his talents as both a strategic leader and a day-to-day operator in large complex retail businesses.
“I know he shares a commitment to people and delivering for customers. I’m looking forward to the contribution I know he’ll make here at Asda.”
Until 2009 King was CEO of Tesco Kipa, the rival retailer’s Turkish operation and he has also headed up Tesco stores in South Korea, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary.
Once King starts in January it will complete Asda’s executive reshuffle following Andy Bond’s move from CEO to become part-time chairman of the Asda executive committee in April.
