Christmas beauty product sales in the UK are set to be higher than they have been for many years, according to a new study from market research company The NPD Group.
Its BeautyTrends Point of Sales panel indicates that the prestige beauty market in the UK increased 8.8 per cent in value between January and September 2010, compared to the same period one year before.
The data suggests that this area of health and beauty retail is less affected by the economic problems encountered across the country, with this year’s growth coming on top of a 6.2 per cent market increase between 2008 and 2009.
According to NPD, the UK prestige beauty market is performing better than Spain, Italy and France, helped primarily by fragrance and skincare which make up 37 and 32 per cent of the market respectively.
June Jensen, Manager for NPD Beauty UK, commented: “So far in 2010, each sector of the prestige beauty market has delivered strong growth in value every month and it’s a trend that is increasing as we head towards Christmas.
“With performance like this in the market, we predict it will be a very happy Christmas for the industry.”
Meanwhile online health and beauty retailer Feelunique.com, which sells products from companies such as Clarins, Elizabeth Arden and GHD, announced this week that it processed its one millionth order - five years since launching its website.
CEO and co-founder of the company Aaron Chatterley, who was interviewed by Retail Gazette in November, said: “We have spent a huge amount of time and effort persuading the premium suppliers that we can provide a retail environment and level of service that matches or exceeds our high street rivals.
“We are now seeing the benefit of that committed and unrelenting dedication to customer service.”
