Supermarket arm of the John Lewis Partnership Waitrose surpassed total annual sales of £5 billion last week, it was confirmed today.
Ahead of full-year results due next year, the grocer achieved the landmark for the first time ever on Saturday January 29th after seeing a 6.4 per cent year-on-year increase in sales during the previous seven days.
Total sales growth for the 12 months starting February 1st 2010 now stands at almost ten per cent.
Mark Price, Managing Director of Waitrose, said: “Five billion is a fitting finale to a year of growth and consistent outperformance of our industry.
“Achieving this milestone is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of the 44,000 partners who work at Waitrose.”
Strong yearly sales across the whole partnership for 2010 is spurring a growth strategy for this year, with a new Little Waitrose fascia launched in London last week heralding the supermarket’s expansion into the convenience market.
According to Kantar Worldpanel data, Waitrose increased its market share by 0.3 per cent over the last year to 4.4 per cent.
