Marks & Spencer (M&S) has today appointed Jan Heere as Director of International, as the UK retailer looks to expand its operations abroad.
Heere arrives from Zara owner Inditex, where he held the General Manager role for the company’s Russian territory for the last five years.
CEO of M&S Marc Bolland revealed at the end of 2010 that the food and clothing retailer is planning considerable international expansion in the year ahead, and the new recruit has sufficient experience to lead this drive.
In the last five years Heere has grown Inditex’s Russian property portfolio from 20 stores to more than 170, employing around 4,500 people in the process. He has worked in retail for ten years in total.
Bolland said he was “delighted” to appoint a new Director of International, adding: “Jan’s impressive international experience fits well with the international growth plans we outlined in November.”
The new recruit commented: “International retail is a real opportunity for M&S - I am very pleased to be joining at such an exciting time and look forward to getting started.”
Back in November, Bolland announced he wants to grow international sales from £500 million in 2010 to close to £1 billion by 2013/14.
More recently the business reported strong trading activity in its third quarter to January 1st 2011, with an impressive performance from its fashion department driving a like-for-like (LFL) sales increase of 2.8 per cent year-on-year.
