Orna Ni-Chionna has been picked as the new Senior Independent Director of the HMV Group board today, replacing Phillip Rowley who has become its Chairman.
Rowley was promoted to the leader of the retailer’s executive board after former chairman Robert Swannell stepped down last week, saying that he could not fit the increasing demands of the job into his available time.
Along with serving on the HMV board as a non-executive director since September 2009, Ni-Chionna has also held many director level positions for a variety of major companies across a number of different sectors.
She has been Senior Independent Director at FMCG company Northern Foods since 2002, in 2009 was appointed non-executive director of Royal Mail, and has previously been a board member of Bupa, Bank of Ireland and Bristol & West.
Also, she has served as a member of the UK Retail and Consumer Advisory Board of Apax Partners and is the Chair of the Trustees of the Soil Association.
HMV’s board has a tough job ahead after watching the retailer’s shares plummet last week following the admission that it would miss profit targets for this year.
CEO Simon Fox announced the closure of 60 stores in January and trading has remained weak but Rowley remains confident that the company can still turn things around.
Speaking last week, he said: “I look forward very much to taking on the role of Chairman of HMV Group at this important time and to working closely with Simon and the board on the challenges and opportunities facing the group.”
