Carphone Warehouse appoints new Retail Director


Mobile phone and electricals retailer Carphone Warehouse (CPW) has named former Sainsbury’s Zone Managing Director Anthony Hemmerdinger as its new Retail Director.

The new recruit will run CPW’s 800-plus stores in the UK when he joins in the summer, representing a step up in responsibility from his time at Sainsbury’s where he looked after 135 outlets across London and the south of England.

Hemmerdinger will report directly to CPW’s Managing Director Matt Stringer, who expects the new employee to play a key role in the retailer’s Connected World initiative, which is currently being rolled out across its network of stores.

Stringer said: “Anthony brings a wealth of commercial experience across to our business.

“I believe he is a great cultural fit for us with a real passion for driving service and developing teams with a strong retail voice to influence central functions.”

Ahead of his arrival, Hemmerdinger commented: “I am really looking forward to getting stuck in and delivering a great level of service for our customers.”

In January the CPW Group reported an encouraging third-quarter performance, with CPW Europe - the joint venture between the UK electricals retailer and US business Best Buy - posting a 0.7 per cent annual increase in like-for-like (LFL) revenue.

LFL sales in UK operations grew by 2.3 per cent during the quarter, and the business reaffirmed its confidence in the potential of its Best Buy partnership in Britain despite a number of senior managers departing in recent months.
