Morrisons Business Development Director Christopher Taylor will join fellow retailer Marks & Spencer next month to run its Simply Food outlets, it was announced today.
He will start on May 3rd, taking responsibility for 360 stores, 335 hospitality units and a total of 9,000 members of staff under the title of Director of Simply Food, Franchise and Hospitality.
Taylor will be part of the M&S’s Retail Leadership Team and will report into the company’s Director of Retail Steve Rowe.
He brings with him more than 35 years of experience in food retailing, having spent time at supermarket groups Safeway and Morrisons.
It is a UK-focussed role and is not related to M&S’s recently announced plans to expand into Europe, which will begin with a store opening on Paris’s Champs-Elysées later this year.
Today’s appointment news comes after M&S published its fourth quarter trading earlier this week, showing that like-for-like (LFL) sales remained flat year-on-year during the three-month period.
LFL general merchandise sales in the UK fell 3.9 per cent compared to Q4 one year ago, with M&S explaining that the poor year-on-year comparisons were due the 2009/10 period not covering the five days of Christmas trading.
Food sales outperformed general merchandise sales though, growing 3.4 per cent on a LFL basis during the quarter.
