Diane von Furstenberg, the fashion designer famous for the wrap dress, will create a new collection for Gap Kids and Baby Gap, it was announced today.
The collection will be available in stores across the globe and online from March 2012, and could be central to turning around ailing international group sales.
Trading outside North America has slumped significantly since the turn of the year, with retail sales figures published last week indicating that international sales dropped nine per cent year-on-year in May.
CEO and Chairman Glenn Murphy said at the time that, even though group net sales increased during the month, he recognised the need for Gap’s brands to perform better and more consistently.
Gap Kids and Baby Gap are, however, among the company’s strongest performing divisions in North America and have increased their presence internationally in recent years - but the arrival of von Furstenberg will provide an extra fillip.
President of Gap Brand in North America Art Peck commented: “We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to build on Gap’s successful past collaborations and develop this collection with Diane, a true American fashion icon and inspiration to women around the world.”
Von Furstenberg added: “As a proud mother and grandmother I am so excited to create a capsule collection for children with the superstar retailer.”
