Westfield Stratford City, the new £1.45 billion shopping centre in east London, welcomed more than one million people through its doors during its first seven days, it was announced late yesterday.
The site, which recently became an official sponsor of the London 2012 Olympic Games due to its close proximity to the event’s facilities, has reached the landmark visitor figure three days quicker than Westfield’s other centre in the capital located at White City.
Opened on Tuesday September 13th to much fanfare, Westfield Stratford City is being used by many retailers as a site to showcase new concepts and trial fresh ideas, with many fashion specialists creating new look stores and offering innovative technology.
Huge US retailers such as Forever 21 sit alongside a number of the UK’s leading industry players, with large John Lewis and Marks & Spencer outlets anchoring either end of the site.
Commenting on the first week of operating, Managing Director of Westfield UK/Europe and New Markets Michael Gutman said: “We are overwhelmed by the response from our consumers who have flocked to the newly opened Westfield Stratford City.
“In the first seven days over one million people have already experienced the new centre and the transport infrastructure, both road and rail, has performed superbly.”
