McArthurGlen posts 66% August sales increase

Designer outlet group McArthurGlen has today announced a sales increase of 66 per cent year-on-year for August, citing unseasonably cold weather as the cause for the positive uplift in clothing sales.

Early autumn weather drove the increase as shoppers flocked to the seven nationwide outlets to pick up autumn/winter fashion ranges.

Europe’s leading outlet group, which provides a platform for high-end brands to sell products at significantly discounted prices, also suggested that the growth of its UK portfolio had further improved profits.

Henrik Madsen, Managing Director for McArthurGlen Northern Europe, explained that new retailers opening at its centres has played a part in the group’s recent successes.

“Over the last six months we have introduced four new designer fashion brands to our UK portfolio - Gant, Guess, Reiss and Wolford,” he said.

“This strengthening of our fashion brand offer has played a key part in driving sales of designer collections up 66 per cent.

“The early arrival of autumn weather has also driven August sales, with strong sales in autumn/winter fashion collections coming up to five weeks earlier than usual.”

Accessories also play a significant role in the company, with over 750 brands on offer at the outlets.

The sector reported a boost in sales of 19 per cent for the month compared to the same period last year, while back-to-school items also proved popular, with a sales uplift of 21 per cent year-on-year.

McArthurGlen’s improvement in revenue reflects the growing economic pressure faced by consumers who are keen to accept sales promotions and bargains.

Yesterday, supermarket giant Tesco capitalised on this desire to save cash by announcing The Big Price Drop, a promise to reduce prices on over 3,000 products.

McArthurGlen’s UK Country Manager, Colin Wilding, commented on the importance of such offers.

“Our rewards scheme data also illustrates an increase in new shoppers coming to our UK centres in August,” he explained.

“As shoppers are looking to get the most out of their autumn/winter fashion budgets, more and more consumers are exploring outlet shopping at McArthurGlen to get their favourite fashion labels for 60 per cent less than full price.”
