Tesco enters beauty market


Supermarket giant Tesco has launched beauty shops in three of its UK stores, offering beauty treatments and haircuts to customers, it was announced today.

Shoppers at the stores, located in Dudley, Horwich and Newport, will be offered the treatments on a non-appointment basis as the retailer seeks to enter the multi-million pound beauty sector.

Dudley Extra, which re-opened earlier this month and is located on Birmingham New Road, has more than doubled in size from 40,000 sq ft to 100,000 sq ft, with the new beauty salon being run by salon and beauty products chain Regis.

‘We are making life as simple as possible for our customers,’ explains Karen Davis, Tesco’s Category Buying Manager for beauty.

“There will be no less than four stylists available at peak times and a salon manager. Plus we’ll have two beauty therapists and a separate threading area and nail bar just outside the salon.”

As well as the Beauty Salon, Dudley will also see the launch of the newly dedicated Beauty Shops, with a bespoke area incorporating a number of essential beauty ranges.

As a further incentive to try out the new offering, customers can earn Tesco Clubcard points each time they visit the salon or shop.

Prices at the salons range from £10 to £25, while the group has also unveiled plans to offer 700 beauty products online to coincide with the openings.

Available from October 31st 2011, products include 24 prestige brands such as St Tropez self tan as well as Barry M, Maybelline and the brand new F&F Made Up, a new own-product range.

Buying Manager for Tesco Prestige Beauty, Roddy Zevla, explained that the new beauty section will include exclusive ranges and offers both in-store and online.

“There are a lot of fantastic products out there, available at good prices and we will be making a home for them at Tesco,” Zevla commented.

“Tesco is the first UK supermarket to develop a strong and desirable presence within beauty brands. We are constantly striving to grow our mix of premium ranges, offering newness and exclusivity for our customers and delivering true luxury – all at great Tesco prices.”
