In a departure from its usual product mix, department store group John Lewis is to start stocking a collection of famous vinyl albums in its outlets in the run-up to Christmas.
Classic records such as Massive Attack’s Blue Lines, Nirvana’s Nevermind and Rolling Stones’ Let It Bleed will be sold by the retailer alongside new ‘play and display’ flip frames which allow the albums to be mounted on the wall.
This will be the first time John Lewis has ever sold vinyl albums and it comes at a time when the older music format is experiencing somewhat of a revival, with the Official Charts Company, which tracks music sales, revealing last week that vinyl record sales are up 40 per cent year-on-year so far in 2011.
Vinyl framing specialist Art Vinyl created the unique flip frames to house the 20 selected albums, meaning the products can be mounted on to the wall as an art piece and easily opened to release the record housed within and replace it with another album.
Founder of Art Vinyl Andrew Heeps said: “This is good news for the hard-pressed music industry since it will bring some of the most influential albums of all time to a wider audience.
“All too often we hear about retailers moving out of music so it is great to see John Lewis stocking vinyl for the first time.”
Each 12-inch vinyl record sold at John Lewis will come with a CD of the same track listing all in the original sleeve.
Paul Deckland, Buyer of Wall Decor at John Lewis, commented: “The play and display flip frame is real innovation. I love the idea of our customers being able to easily display their best loved album covers and turning them into art.
“The cleverness of the flip frames is that the albums are easily accessible so you still get to enjoy playing your favourite music. The 20 albums we have selected to sell alongside the frames represent some of the most iconic music in the world.
“We have tried to stretch the boundaries a little with our titles mixing the newer mega artists with real must-have classics. The fact each album comes with a CD also means that they make a fabulous gift even for those without a turntable.”
