Discount retailer Poundland is to recruit 2,000 temporary employees in the run up to Christmas, it has been announced today.

The retailer, which claims to regularly serve up to four million customers per week, is in need of extra employees as thrifty consumers head to stores in the hope of a festive bargain pushing an additional one million customers through its doors over the period .

Last year, a similar amount of temporary jobs were offered across the UK and some 500 workers went on to become permanent employees.

Earlier this year, the retailer implemented new stock control, distribution, financial and staff management systems in order to integrate sales and stock information, via EPOS, with a 24-hour warehousing operation, and this new infrastructure is expected to be invaluable during the festive period.

The company has continued to grow its store portfolio in recent times, opening 64 stores in the 12 months ending March 27th 2011.

Last month, the company released results for its last financial year, recording a 34 per cent year-on-year rise in EBITDA and a turnover of £642 million for the period.

Jim McCarthy, CEO of Poundland, explained why such a high number of extra Christmas employees was necessary.

“We need on average five or six extra colleagues in each store to help us cope with the busiest time of the year,” he said.

“The response so far has been fantastic; we’re looking for applicants with enthusiasm and determination, and people who are hard working to help deliver amazing value and service to our customers.”
