General merchandise retailer Argos is to create 12,000 new jobs across the UK and Republic of Ireland in the run-up to Christmas, it has been announced today.

Offering training and flexible working hours, the roles are for up to three months with the possibility to extend to four as well as potentially permanent employment should vacancies be available.

In a bid to aid the unemployed in a “challenging jobseeker‘s market”, Argos is offering 9.170 jobs in England, 978 in Scotland and 756 in Wales.

There are also 425 roles available in Northern Ireland and 670 in the Republic of Ireland and the retailer noted that 90 per cent of the population live less than 10 minutes from one of its 740 branches, making the vacancies accessible nationwide.

Continuing its partnership with TUI UK, parent company of travel companies Thomson and First Choice, Argos is inviting TUI UK summer seasonal workers to apply for its Christmas jobs.

Earlier this month Argos, which is owned by Home Retail Group, announced a total sales rise of one per cent to £867 million in the 13 weeks to September 1st 2012 while online sales jumped 16 per cent.

John Walden, Managing Director at Argos, explained the need to prepare for the busiest time of the year.

“Christmas is our busiest period of the year so we always need extra help in our stores to ensure we can deliver great service to the millions of customers who shop with us at this time.

“Argos is a fast paced, exciting and interesting place to be during the festive season so we are looking for passionate and enthusiastic staff to join our teams.”
