Upmarket supermarket Waitrose has poached Direct Wines‘ Wine Buyer Cat Lomax to join its team, it has been announced today.

During her tenure at Direct Wines, which she joined in 2009, Lomax was named ‘Young Achiever of the Year‘ in 2011 and contributed to winning ‘Retail Buying Team of the Year‘ the following year.

Prior to that, Lomax worked at Anthony Byrne Fine Wines as well as the University of Cambridge and is beginning a Master of Wine course next year.

Competition over wine prices continues in the grocery sector in a bid to dominate market share and discount supermarket Aldi has found success with its super premium wine range, launched in November last year.

Commenting on Lomax‘s appointment, Ken Mackay MW, Wine Buying Manager at Waitrose, said: “As well as clear commercial skill and an enormous passion for wine, Cat is incredibly personable and I‘m very sure that she will not only be a great asset to our team, but also a pleasure for us all to work with over the coming years.”
