John Lewis Partnership Chairman Sir Charlie Mayfield has been appointed the British Retail Consortium‘s new chairman.

Mayfield has been with John Lewis since 2000 and will take over from Kingfisher chief Sir Ian Cheshire at the end of September.

‘I am very much looking forward to working with Ian for the next six months and then chairing the BRC as we continue to modernise and campaign on behalf of the whole industry,” Mayfield said in a statement. “Building on the great work the BRC has led over recent years, it is critical that we continue to have a strong and effective trade association to galvanise retail employers and attract the very best new talent from across society into retail.”

Sir Ian Cheshire said: “We are living through a period of profound political and economic change and no one is better placed to take the BRC forward. I would like to pay tribute also to Rob Templeman who stands down as vice-chair. Rob has completed an additional term of office to support the BRC through a period of intensive change and his stewardship has been immensely valuable.”

Helen Dickinson, Director General paid tribute to Chesire‘s “guidance, insight and support” as the BRC continues to represent “retail at its best.”
