Tesco has deemphasised The Guardian’s claim that it will be axing 39,000 store staff over the next three years.

Last week the national said that it had seen a leaked document outlining a programme called ‘Project Pace’. An extract was uploaded onto the website verylittlehelps.com, a forum inspired by the grocer’s slogan and used by its staff.

Tesco confirmed the document is an authentic one but also that modelled a number of scenarios.

“This is not a new programme of job losses, and we are not announcing one,” a Tesco spokesman said. “We do not comment on rumours other than to say that we are transforming Tesco into an organisation that meets the needs of customers in a rapidly changing retail sector and as such continue to plan accordingly.”

CEO Dave Lewis has already cut back on staff, as well as assets, in attempt to revive the business.

There are currently some 3,500 UK stores and more than 310,000 employees.
