Announcing a new efficiency plan today, high street chemist Alliance Boots has announced that around 900 of its non-store jobs are set to disappear.
Alliance Boots is targeting a reduction of £56 million per annum in operating costs by 2013/14 by streamlining manufacturing operations and optimising supply chain activities.
Almost ten per cent of the retailer’s non-store roles, most of which are at its main UK base in Nottingham, will be lost over the next three years.
Alex Gourlay, CEO of the Health & Beauty Division at Alliance Boots, commented: “Since 2007 we have undertaken a number of steps to make our business more robust, investing significantly in our stores and commercial offering.
“This latest phase will enable us to have a stronger and more agile support infrastructure fit for the long-term future.”
Around 115,000 people are employed by Alliance Boots worldwide, including 70,000 in the UK.
The retailer is hoping that a large amount of the reduction will be achieved through staff turnover and by offering redevelopment to other areas within its group.
Gourlay continued: “Our intention is to be open and transparent about how we see the future, but we understand the impact that today’s announcement may have on our people.
“The leadership team is fully committed to supporting them in the months ahead as we further evolve our organisation.”
