The City of London’s newest shopping destination One New Change is employing ‘British innovation at its best’ to cut carbon emissions, a government minister said today.
One New Change is employing a state-of-the-art technology to cut its yearly emissions by ten per cent and potentially save £300,000 each year through a heat transference system.
Owner of the 550,000 sq ft site, Land Securities, has worked closely in partnership over the last three years with Geothermal International, a company specialising in heat pumps, to develop a world leading renewable energy technology to heat and cool the centre.
Stretching down 150 ft underground are 60km of pipe works - enough to wrap around the London Eye 140 times - both cooling and heating the complex through the use of the world’s most pioneering and environmentally-friendly technology.
Climate Change Minister Greg Barker said: “One New Change has set its sights on being the most innovative shopping destination in the City, so it’s no surprise it has installed the latest state-of-the-art energy efficient heating system.”
Land Securities currently stands as the largest commercial property company in the UK and is keen to ‘lead by example’ on tackling climate change. It hopes to reduce carbon emissions by 30 per cent by 2020 and deliver on the government’s objective to create a low carbon economy.
Land Securities CEO Francis Salway added: “We are proud to be pioneering this highly advanced renewable energy system at One New Change.
“We hope to transform the way the industry designs and builds properties.”
