International health & beauty retail group Alliance Boots has signed a partnership deal with Europe’s biggest retailer Carrefour, it has been announced.
As part of a long-term cooperation agreement the companies will explore healthcare partnership possibilities in emerging countries.
Carrefour also hopes to use the technical knowledge of the Boots contract manufacturing business to enhance its beauty products offering.
Alex Gourlay, CEO of the Health & Beauty Division at Alliance Boots, said: “We are delighted to have established this partnership in beauty care between Carrefour and our company.
“As we investigate healthcare possibilities together in emerging markets, we look forward to creating more opportunities for both organisations.”
France-based Carrefour is the second biggest international grocer ahead of Tesco but recent analysis by Verdict suggested that its British rival will grow at a faster rate over the next five years.
This new partnership with Alliance Boots should increase the retailer’s potential to exploit emerging markets, including China and India, which will become increasingly important to the growth of multi-nationals.
Alliance Boots recently increased its stake in leading Turkish Pharmacy wholesaler Hedef Alliance to 70 per cent, demonstrating its international ambitions.
Lars Olofsson, Carrefour’s CEO, stated: “This new partnership with Boots is a major step forward for Carrefour. It will allow us to make a quantum leap in the beauty category.
“This partnership will significantly enhance Carrefour’s attractiveness in a key category and should be a major contributor to becoming the preferred retailer.”
