M&S signs Home collection deal with Conran


High street retailer Marks & Spencer (M&S) has today confirmed a new deal with Sir Terence Conran’s company to design for it a new homewares collection.

The new ‘Conran Exclusive Design only at M&S’ range of furniture, bedding, lighting and kitchenware will be available from September 2011, with each piece designed by the Conran & Company team.

It is part of M&S CEO Marc Bolland’s plan to better segment the retailer’s homeware department into Classic, Design and Contemporary categories, with Conran’s designs forming the basis of the latter.

Bolland commented: “I’m very proud to announce our exciting new collaboration with Britain’s most influential designer, Sir Terence Conran.

“I’ve long admired the work of Sir Terence - his name is synonymous with exquisite modern design and he was the natural choice of partner to help us create our Contemporary homeware range.”

In November Bolland set out plans to evolve the M&S brand through brand streamlining and international expansion.

Around 20 per cent of the retailer’s customers shop within its homewares department and so Bolland wants to offer a wider customer choice by offering more contemporary pieces.

With more than 50 years experience in the design industry, Sir Terence Conran is one of the most well-respected practitioners of his craft.

Sir Terence Conran said: “To work with M&S on this project is the opportunity of a lifetime. It gives us the chance to produce a truly democratic and British collection, something that I have been aiming to achieve all my working life.

“Everything that William Morris and the Bauhaus, both great inspirations to me, hoped to achieve. This is our chance at last.”
