Departing Spar Managing Director (MD) Jerry Marwood has been named non-executive director at field marketing agency eXPD8, as the company looks to expand its operations into the grocery sector.
The firm provides field marketing and retail support services such as stock management to a range of suppliers and retailers, and Marwood brings with him nearly nine years’ experience of leading the UK’s number one convenience store network.
His whole career has been spent in retail, including roles at Gateway, Somerfield, Tesco and The Co-operative Group, and he explained to Retail Gazette earlier this year how the convenience retail sector is “a growth market”.
Co-founder of eXPD8 Mark Thurgood commented: “We have been very successful in growing our business in non-food categories, and Jerry’s appointment will underpin our expansion into grocery particularly within the convenience sector.”
Sarah Wilson, eXPD8 non-executive and Director of Consulting Operations at consultancy group Egremont, added: “We are absolutely delighted that Jerry is joining us, his industry knowledge and experience will be invaluable to us.”
Despite revealing his intention to leave Spar towards the end of 2010, and having since been replaced by Debbie Robinson, Marwood is keen to emphasise that he is not yet ready for retirement.
Speaking in January, he said: “There’s another ten years of work in me and I’m keen to do something else.”
