Thursday March 24th sees the UK launch of the 3D handheld games console device from Nintendo, the 3DS, and over 1,200 stores across the country will open at midnight for eager fans.
Entertainment retailer HMV is the official UK launch partner and its flagship store on London’s Oxford Street will host the premier of the device and be the location of the first customer purchase in the country.
VIP events will be held at 13 stores - four Game, two Gamestation and one Asda, Tesco, Argos, Smyths Toys, Xtra-vision and Gamestop outlets each - where special discount software will be available and the first to buy at each location will get a free taxi ride home.
David Yarnton, General Manager of Nintendo UK, said: “We’ve been blown away by both retail and consumer reaction to Nintendo 3DS.
“With over 1,000 stores opening across the UK at midnight to launch the console, this has the potential to be one of our biggest launches ever in the UK.”
The 3DS offers three-dimensional imagery to its users without the need for specially designed glasses, and is the latest product in the long running Nintendo DS range.
It features the Virtual Console game downloading service, augmented reality functionality, video content and the ability to locate other 3DS devices in the near vicinity.
HMV, which is opening 100 of its stores at midnight specially for the launch, is offering gift cards to 3DS customers and money off the retail price of the new console for those who trade-in their old DS, DSi or DSi XL machines.
Head of Games at HMV Tim Ellis commented: “We want to help make this one of the biggest and most memorable games launches ever, so HMV’s going full-out to offer 3DS customers the best deal anywhere on the high street.”
Global electricals retailer Best Buy is holding the official launch of the 3DS in the US at its Union Square store in New York City.
