Sports Direct recruits Irish politician as non-exec

Sports Direct International has appointed Irish politician and former EU Commissioner for Internal Markets & Services Charles McCreevy as a non-executive director.

The new recruit will offer guidance to the sports equipment and clothing retailer as it continues its growth strategy in the coming years.

McCreevy brings with him a wealth of business and political experience, having held several key roles in the Irish government over the last 20 years such as Finance Minister, Tourism & Trade Minister and Social Welfare Minister.

Dr Keith Hellawell, Non-Executive Chairman of Sports Direct, said: “We are very pleased to welcome Charles to the board of Sports Direct.

“His experience in business and as European Commissioner for Internal Markets and Services will be a great asset to Sports Direct as the company continues to execute its strategic growth plans.”

In February Sports Direct revealed that its total group sales rose 12.1 per cent year-on-year in its third quarter financial period.

Retail sales in the 13 weeks to January 23rd increased 13.8 per cent compared to the same quarter 12 months before, while overall gross group profit totalled £167 million.
