Health & beauty sales soar in Grand National week

Sales of health & beauty products at Debenhams have increased significantly in the build-up to this weekend’s Grand National in Aintree, Liverpool.

The department store group said today that demand for products ahead of Friday’s Ladies Day had resulted in extra shipments being rushed to stores around the Liverpool area in the last week.

Sales of fake tan were up 124 per cent year-on-year, while false eyelashes and lip gloss flew off the shelves at a much faster rate than the same week last year.

Bronzer sales increased 487 per cent, while celebrity fragrances were 512 per cent up on the equivalent week in 2010.

Ladies Day at the Grand National is traditionally attended by a host of celebrities, all keen to showcase the latest UK fashions.

Famous faces spotted in the crowd in recent years include Liverpool footballer Steven Gerrard’s other half Alex Curran andthe star of catalogue retailer Littlewoods’ most recent marketing campaign, Coleen Rooney.

Emma Owen, Marketing and PR Manager at Aintree Racecourse, said: “We’re not at all surprised to hear that sales of beauty products have gone through the roof ahead of Ladies’ Day at the Grand National.

“The festival attracts lots of stunning girls who always go to a lot of effort to look their best for the north-west’s biggest social day out.”
