Fortnum & Mason Managing Director (MD) Beverley Aspinall is one of three leading department store bosses set to address retail industry professionals at this year’s Oxford Summer School, it was announced today.
Liberty Chairman Marc Capello and Tony Wheeler, the Chairman and MD of Liberty and Peter Jones respectively, will join Aspinall as guest speakers at the event.
Her appearance comes soon after the London-based retailer became the scene of an anti-government cuts inspired sit-in-protest in March, prompted by campaigners angry at alleged tax avoidance by the store’s majority owners Whittington Investments.
The Oxford Summer School is run by the British Shops and Stores Association and provides delegates with the opportunity to boost their management skills and their knowledge of the retail industry.
A range of lectures, tutorials and workshops covering subjects such as marketing, merchandising and leadership will take place at the event, which runs from August 20th to 26th at Keble College, University of Oxford.
Nigel Rothband, CEO of the charity Retail Trust, said: “In this climate, it is essential to give the managers at independents the tools they need to survive.
“The Oxford Summer School is an incredibly challenging week, but the rewards will be invaluable for any independent retailer.”
