Peacocks hires ex-Asda CEO as new Chairman

It was confirmed today that Allan Leighton, a veteran of major companies’ boardrooms, has been appointed as the new Chairman of value fashion retailer Peacocks.

A former CEO of Asda and then Walmart Europe after the former’s takeover, Leighton became the Chairman of Royal Mail in 2002 and was the longest holder of the position until he stood down in 2009.

He is currently Deputy Chairman of Selfridges & Co, George Weston and Loblaw Companies, is Chairman of Pandora A/S and Music Magpie and a non-executive director of BSkyB Group.

Richard Kirk, CEO of Peacocks, said: “Allan’s vast experience will be invaluable as we take Peacocks to take the next stage; building on our continuing success in the UK and developing our successful international franchise.

“We are delighted to welcome him into our team.”

This is the latest of a number of significant appointments at Peacocks in the last year, following a shake-up of its buying team in July and a change of Marketing Director and a restructuring of its board in October.

Leighton has previously held non-executive positions in a number of large companies in a variety of industries, including, Leeds United, Dyson, Cannons Group and Bhs.

“Peacocks is a great success story that gives its customers fantastic fashion at unbeatable prices,” Leighton added.

“There are many great opportunities to develop the business and I am excited to be now working with the Peacocks team on this.”
