The UK health & beauty (H&B) arm of Alliance Boots has today appointed two Chief Operating Officers (COO) to work under H&B CEO Alex Gourlay.
Boots UK Retail Director and Commercial Director Simon Roberts and Ken Murphy have each been named COO of the business to help the day-to-day management of Boots in the UK and Ireland.
It comes at a time of much change for the company following the departure of Alliance Boots Group CEO Andy Hornby earlier this year.
Gourlay commented: “These appointments will enable us to have an even better balance between day-to-day performance and the longer term development of the Boots UK, Boots Ireland and Boots Opticians businesses.
“It will also allow us to concentrate on the strategic direction of the division and how it can support Alliance Boots to further internationalise the Boots retail and product brands.”
Roberts will retain responsibility for the retail and pharmacy aspects of the businesses but will also now oversee Boots Opticians, while Murphy will look after trading, brands, supply chain, commercial business development and marketing areas.
In an interview with Retail Gazette last week, Gourlay revealed that an announcement regarding Hornby’s replacement will be made “in due course”, but today’s board reshuffle would suggest that the foundations have been laid for the appointment of a new Group CEO.
Gourlay did not rule himself out of the job but suggested that he “was more than content” with his current challenge overseeing such a large division of the Alliance Boots operation.
