Entertainment retailer Game Group has added to its senior management team this week, as it continues with its new strategy to increase its multichannel retail offering and boost customer engagement.
Former Director of Consumer Sales at telecommunications firm Vodafone Tom Devine has been appointed as the group’s Regional Managing Director (MD) of the UK and Northern Europe, bringing with him vast multichannel experience.
Most recently he spent a year as MD of Mobilephones Direct, and will join Game when current incumbent of the position Martyn Gibbs steps down from the group to seek new challenges on July 29th.
Devine’s role will be to take responsibility for the group’s operations in the UK, Republic of Ireland, Scandinavia and the Czech Republic, and he will report directly to CEO Ian Shepherd.
During the handover period Game’s UK Marketing team will join the Online and CRM teams in reporting to Chief Marketing Officer Dave Hughes, with this new alignment of the business’s key areas intended to aid the group’s stated long-term strategy.
Shepherd said: “We are very pleased to welcome Tom. He brings huge energy and expertise to our group, and will focus on delivering key areas of our strategy.
“Our dedicated teams across Europe are rapidly adapting their specialist services to meet the changing needs of gamers, and Tom will be responsible for leading their success.”
The advent of digital media means bricks and mortar entertainment retailers have seen trading levels fall in recent years, and Game itself reported a year-on-year like-for-like sales decline of 6.7 per cent for the 52 weeks to January 31st 2011. Pre-tax profits also dropped by £61.1 million compared to the previous 12-month period in what was a tough period for the market.
Earlier this year Game announced that 2011 will see the company venture further into social and mobile gaming, and increase its digital and online distribution as a method of reversing these falling sales.
Devine commented: “I am delighted to be joining at this exciting time.
“The Game and Gamestation teams have a great reputation, and are in an excellent position to deliver a new style of multichannel games retailing.
“I believe their strategy is strong, and I’m looking forward to joining the team on their pioneering journey.”
