Tesco Mobile to team up with Vodafone in Hungary

Supermarket giant Tesco is set to launch a new mobile service in Hungary as it partners with phone specialist Vodafone for the first time.

The partnership is expected to complement the existing Tesco Mobile service in the UK, Ireland and Slovakia, and the venture, known as Tesco Mobile Hungary, will be a 50:50 offering providing Tesco Mobile branded services in Hungary through Tesco stores and online, using Vodafone’s technology and network.

Dr György Beck, Chairman and CEO of Vodafone Hungary, explained that the move will enable both companies to broaden their scope and hopes that the nationwide reach of Tesco stores will improve the companies’ standing in a competitive market.

“Combining Tesco’s reach, brand strength and marketing expertise with our modern technology and wide coverage will make Tesco Mobile a successful new mobile player,” he said.

“This joint venture is a mutually strong partnership and will greatly expand the choice available to Hungarian customers.”

The UK’s largest retailer has continued to expand its international offerings and is keen to maintain its global presence, following news last month that the company is to sell its Japanese operations due to low profits .

Gerry Gray, CEO of Tesco Hungary, explained that focusing on opportunities in Hungary was a current priority.

“This is a very exciting launch for Tesco Hungary,” he said.

“We are constantly looking for new opportunities to offer Hungarian customers value and innovation, and we believe that Tesco Mobile will offer both.

“In Vodafone we have a partner with the know-how and potential to make Tesco Mobile as successful in Hungary as it is in the UK, Republic of Ireland and Slovakia.”
