A new Samsung mobile handset, the Wave 578, which features contactless payment technology is to be made available in the coming weeks, it was announced today.
Using systems developed by network provider Orange and financial transaction firm Barclaycard, users of the new Samsung Wave will be able to pay for goods at participating retailers simply by swiping their phone across payment terminals.
This is the second Samsung phone to feature Barclaycard & Orange’s Quick Tap system, following the Tocco released earlier this year, and is part of a new wave of handsets changing the nature of point of sale purchases.
Over 50,000 stores nationwide currently allow the use of the Quick Tap system for payment of up to £15, with traders involved in the scheme including Prêt a Manger, Eat, Little Chef, Subway, Wilkinson and McDonalds.
David Chan, CEO of Barclaycard Consumer Europe, said: “Paying with a mobile phone means never being without the right change, and always having access to funds. That’s why I believe contactless mobile is the future of payments, and I’m keen it’s made available to as many of our customers as possible.
“At the launch of our first contactless handset earlier this year we promised we would roll out greater choice in the ‘Quick Tap’ range and I’m pleased to be able to announce the first of these new handsets today.”
Other features of the Wave 578 are a 3.2-inch WQVGA TFT screen, Wi-Fi, HSDPA data transfer technology, A-GPS, a MicroSD memory card, Bluetooth and a 3.2-mega pixel camera.
Orange customers will be able to buy the new phone on pay-as-you-go in the next few weeks and it will also be available on certain price plans.
As part of the launch Orange is offering £10 to anyone purchasing the product and ten per cent cash back on all Quick Tap buys made in the first 90 days of ownership.
Simeon Bird, Director of Propositions at Orange, commented: “We’re pleased to be offering the Samsung Wave 578, which is the next in a range of Quick Tap enabled mobiles we have planned for the UK.
“Only on Orange will customers benefit from the greater convenience and control over their high street purchases which Quick Tap provides them with.”
