Department store retailer Debenhams has today launched a new online platforms which allows customers to access its transactional site and use all of its functions via mobile handsets.
The retailer claims the new mobile-enabled site makes it the first high street retailer to provide a complete range of mobile offerings to its customers, combining mobile apps and a designated mobile site.
Following in-house research which shows that the number of visitors from mobile phones onto Debenhams.com rose by 225 per cent year-on-year in August, the new platform compliments the retailer’s existing app on the iPhone, Android, Nokia and its mobile Beauty Club loyalty scheme.
Simon Forster, Director for Debenhams.com, commented: “Mobile continues to form a large part of our digital strategy, as an area which shows no sign of slowing down.
“We have seen a clear demand for shopping on the go. The addition of the m-site to our mobile offering means that no customer is excluded.”
Designed entirely by the Debenhams team, the new site offers features such as store locations, opening hours, Debenhams TV and links to its Facebook page.
More innovative technologies are also being championed by the retailer such as QR codes and Aurasma (a mobile based augmented reality platform), as it tries to link in-store and virtual shopping experiences.
In a further indicator of the brand’s growing multichannel presence, its research shows that its iPhone app was downloaded over 500,000 times in the six months since it was launched and has racked up over £1 million in sales.
