Peter Blakemore, Managing Director of AF Blakemore, is standing down from the postion he has held for 20 years as chairman of the Spar Food Distributors (SFD) board, it was announced today.
He will be replaced by Martin Agnew, former Chairman of the National Guild of Spar, later this month as Spar continues to renew and transform its management structure.
Today also sees new Managing Director of Spar Debbie Robinson officially start work having been appointed to replace long-serving boss Jerry Marwood who will leave the convenience retail group at the end of this month.
Agnew commented: “Spar is radically changing as an organisation in order to meet the needs of our retailers in the future. The first step in our process has been to reduce the cost of membership.
“Over the past months, we have announced many different low cost model packages for our retailers. We are also working on a number of other exciting strategies to develop the Spar business and I look forward to the challenge of guiding the strategic thinking of Spar in the future.”
Blakemore, who oversaw the acquisition of Capper & Co by his family business in March, started as SFD Chairman in 1991 and will remain as a director on the board of the SFD and will also represent Spar in the UK on the International Spar board.
Meanwhile Agnew will be replaced at The National Guild by James Hall & Co director Dominic Hall, who becomes the eighth holder of the office, a position that is always held by a Director of the SFD board.
Hall added: “The guild system has been a major factor in the ongoing success of Spar in the UK.”
“The guild is a forum for committed retailers to directly input into Spar’s operation and development. This unique body has created the opportunity for Spar to reflect the true partnership between the wholesaler, the retailer and central office.”
