Starbucks and Apple team up for iTunes deal


Coffee retailer Starbucks has teamed up with technology giant Apple to launch a ‘Pick of the Week’ download card, it was announced today.

The card, redeemable from the online iTunes store, offers customers a complimentary song or book every Monday at over 700 of the retailer’s UK stores.

Singer-songwriter James Morrison has teamed up with Starbucks and Apple to launch the programme, and his song “In My Dreams” will be the first free download, available today.

Alan Glynn’s novel ‘Limitless’ will also be available to download as an iBook and, once ‘Pick of the Week’ cards are distributed, customers will have up to 60 days from the date they are available to redeem their complimentary offering on iTunes.

This UK launch follows the success of the initiative in the US, where it has been running in all 7,000 Starbucks stores since 2006. This roll-out signals the start of a global partnership between the coffee beverage retailer and Apple.

The deal follows the launch of the iPhone 4S in the UK last week, the latest addition to the iPhone family and first offering since the death of Apple Co-Founder Steve Jobs earlier this month.

A spokesman for Starbucks explained that technological innovations are a primary focus for the US-based company.

“This announcement comes hot on the heels of the unveiling this week of Starbucks new one-click Wi-Fi, offering fast web access without the need to register,” commented a spokesman.

“Launching easy-access free Wi-Fi and giving free downloads are just some of the ways that Starbucks are offering customers more value.”
