Convenience supermarket Spar is to open a store in Abu Dhabi as the group looks to expand its property portfolio to the Middle East, it announced yesterday.
The first store to open in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Abu Dhabi unit operates on one floor is located in the Khalidiya business district.
Offering a range of over 20,000 products, the shop will contain fresh food departments, with a strong focus on local and regional food products. As well as this, the retailer will also import international Spar products from Europe.
Providing employment for 120 people, the supermarket will ensure that all employees receive retail development training, provided by a local partner.
The store is to follow the growing trend among grocers to offer more than food to consumers, as an optician, a banking services centre and a pizzeria and cafe will be present in store. This follows news last week that supermarket Tesco is to offer beauty salons in three of its UK stores .
Plans have also been unveiled to open a second Spar in Abu Dhabi’s Khalifa district later in the year, while further stores are to open across UAE in 2012.
The group aims to open nine stores, hypermarkets and supermarkets, which are to be operational by the end of 2013.
“The opening of the first Spar supermarket in the Middle East is part of the global expansion strategy of Spar International,” explained Dr Gordon Campbell, Managing Director of Spar International BV.
“By 2015 we plan for Spar to have significant presence not only in the UAE but also across a number of other GCE countries. This exciting opening in Abu Dhabi increases the global footprint of Spar with the UAE becoming the 35th country in which Spar operates.”
