Shoppers offer Christmas cheer to UK retail – Retail Gazette

Christmas shop tills ringing at last West End stores predict £180m sales today with 1m shoppers spending on fashions and gifts

Saturday 10th December 2011 –over 50,000 “early bird” shoppers were out in London‘s West End by 8.30am this morning for a bumper Christmas shopping day, as the West End removed all traffic on Oxford Street and Regent Street to make way for festive shoppers for the 7th American Express Annual Shop West End VIP (Very Important Pedestrian) Weekend.

Tills were ringing by 9am, with stores including Selfridges, Hamleys, John Lewis, Debenhams, Zara and Primark registering their first transactions of the day within one minute of opening. By midday over 400,000 shoppers were out in the West End, with event organisers New West End Company predicting £180m in sales for the day, with 1m shoppers total shoppers for the Saturday, the first day of VIP Weekend.
