Supermarket chain Asda today announced its plans to launch a new fast-track retail management scheme which will see 15 graduates reach store management position in just 12 months.

Starting in September, the scheme will place candidates into the supermarket‘s smaller stores providing a direct route into management positions.

This approach differs from the Asda Graduate Scheme where training is provided in distribution centres, larger stores or at its head office as fast-tracked candidates are offered greater interaction with shoppers.

Successful candidates will gain an aptitude for business, learning how to lead a team of 30 colleagues in preparation for taking up a managerial role in October 2013.

This fast-track scheme is currently open to applicants who fit into the criteria of a 2:2 degree and have an interest in retail with the grocer promising to provide a competitive salary and other benefits including store discounts, in keeping with the retail chain‘s ongoing commitment to being the youth employer of choice.

Last year, the company launched the Asda Skills Academy which offered an alternative to a university degree as training comes in the form of a City & Guilds apprenticeship.

On completion of the apprenticeship, employees will receive an accreditation ranging from Level 2 (GCSE‘s) to Level 4 (HND) in the areas of customer services and fresh food.

Earlier this week, Asda branched out into financial services, launching Asda Money to appeal to the 18 million customers visiting its 542 stores each week; becoming the first supermarket to offer an unlimited cashback facility.

A commitment to customers and employees is at the heart of the business, Hayley Tatum, Asda‘s People Director explained.

“Our colleagues are the lifeblood of our business, so we are always looking at new ways to attract the next generation of retail talent,” she said.

“Through the course of this fast-track scheme, our trainees will not only be given first class training and be exposed to every element of the Asda business, but they will also quickly be making decisions that will make a real difference to thousands of customers every week.”
